Leeds Opera Festival 2023

19 August to 10 September 2023

Inspired by the music and opera of Latin America, our 2023 Festival featured the UK premiere of Robert Rodriguez's Frida and Astor Piazzolla's tango opera Maria de Buenos Aires - both performed at Leeds School of Arts

Taking place in venues and communities across the city, the Festival brought together outstanding local, national and international talent - foregrounding artists with Latin American heritage

Performed and acclaimed in the US, Mexico and Europe, the Festival will produce the UK premiere of Robert Rodriguez musical biography of Frida Kahlo. Described by USA Today as "exciting, raw, wonderfully dangerous theater", the production will be conducted by Cuban-American Odaline de la Martinez - a renowned contemporary music conductor and the first female conductor at the BBC Proms - and directed by Francesca Murray-Fuentes.

Reflecting Leeds' passion and expertise for both music and dance, Piazzolla's tango opera is a heady invocation of life on the streets of Argentina. Choreographed by Carlos Pons Guerra, Artistic Director of DeNada Dance, conducted by Natalia Luis-Bassa, and featuring dancers from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance
